under the influence of nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas.
<div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" The collision caused substantial damage to the victim’s vehicle and resulted in possible injuries to the other driver.

The incident began when Mason struck the rear of another car on the busy roadway. Rather than stopping to exchange information or check on the other driver’s condition, she continued driving away from the scene. The victim, however, managed to note Mason’s license plate number, providing crucial information that led to her quick apprehension.

When officers arrived at Mason’s residence using the tag information provided by the victim, they discovered her sitting inside her home actively inhaling from a can of “Galaxy Gas” – a product containing nitrous oxide. The situation escalated when officers ordered her to stop using the substance, which she reportedly refused to do.

Body camera footage would likely show officers having to physically remove the can from Mason’s possession before taking her into custody. During their investigation, officers observed multiple cans of Galaxy Gas inside her vehicle, suggesting this was not an isolated incident.

The victim had initially told responding officers that Mason appeared to be under the influence at the time of the crash, a suspicion that was confirmed when police located her at home still engaged in substance use.

Mason was transported to the Alachua County Jail and booked on three charges: leaving the scene of a crash, inhaling a harmful substance, and resisting arrest. The combination of these charges reflects the serious nature of driving under the influence of inhalants and the additional legal consequences of fleeing an accident scene.

Nitrous oxide, while commonly used in medical settings for pain relief, has become increasingly popular as a recreational drug. When inhaled, it can cause dizziness, impaired judgment, and reduced motor coordination – all dangerous conditions for operating a vehicle. The substance is legally available for certain commercial uses, including whipped cream dispensers and automotive applications, making it accessible to those who seek to misuse it.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about impaired driving in the Gainesville area and the dangers posed by drivers under the influence of various substances beyond alcohol. The quick actions of the crash victim in obtaining Mason’s tag number were instrumental in bringing this case to a swift resolution.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges could be filed as more information becomes available. Mason’s vehicle has been impounded as evidence, and she will likely face both criminal proceedings and potential civil liability for damages resulting from the crash.

Anyone with additional information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Gainesville Police Department.

352News.com is your source for breaking news and in-depth reporting in North Central Florida. court, proposing to transfer the mixed-use complex’s assets to approximately 30 debtors to satisfy $200 million in outstanding debt.

The proposed reorganization aims to keep the embattled development operational while resolving its financial crisis through a complex asset distribution scheme. Under the plan, Celebration Pointe Holdings would transfer ownership of the property to creditors, who would then work to maintain the facility and find new buyers for individual businesses.

Attorney Scott Shuker, representing three major debtors in the case, expressed optimism about the plan’s potential success, contingent upon the cooperation of principal investor Patricia Shively. Shively, who faces potential financial liability exceeding $100 million, filed a lawsuit in June 2025 against developer Svein Dyrkolbotn and wealth management firm Koss Olinger, alleging she was misled into investing and cosigning loans for the project.

“This plan represents the best path forward to ensure the development continues operating while providing essential services like maintenance, landscaping, and security,” Shuker told reporters following the court proceedings.

The restructuring proposal includes provisions for establishing a property owners association to manage common areas and maintain the development’s infrastructure. Debtors are actively seeking prospective buyers for individual properties within the complex, with negotiations ongoing for deals potentially ranging from $10-40 million to resolve Shively’s ownership stake and debt obligations.

Court documents indicate that if an agreement cannot be reached with Shively by the March 10 hearing date, the case may be dismissed, potentially resulting in portions of the development “going dark” as operations cease.

The Celebration Pointe project, once envisioned as a premier destination featuring retail, dining, and entertainment venues, has struggled financially since its inception. The bankruptcy filing represents the culmination of years of financial difficulties and legal disputes among investors and developers.

Shuker emphasized the urgency of reaching a resolution, noting that continued operations depend on securing new ownership and maintaining essential services throughout the transition period. The attorney confirmed that Shively would receive final financial proposals seven days before the March hearing, giving her adequate time to evaluate the terms.

Representatives for Patricia Shively have not yet responded to requests for comment regarding her position on the proposed restructuring plan.

The case continues to unfold in federal bankruptcy court, with the March 10 hearing scheduled to determine whether the asset transfer plan will proceed or alternative solutions must be explored

Gainesville Newspaper The arrest occurred on January 7, 2026, and involved multiple charges including DUI and failure to maintain his lane.

According to the arrest report, Boukari was stopped by officers after allegedly failing to stay in his lane while driving on SW 34th Street. During the traffic stop, officers determined he was under the influence and placed him under arrest for DUI.

Following his arrest, Boukari was taken to a local hospital after experiencing medical complaints. The nature of his medical issues was not immediately disclosed, but he was treated before being processed through the legal system.

The incident has raised questions about accountability within local media leadership, as Boukari serves as the publisher of Alachua Today, a publication that covers local news and events in the Alachua County area. The arrest comes at a time when the newspaper industry faces ongoing challenges in maintaining credibility and public trust.

DUI charges in Florida carry serious consequences, including potential license suspension, fines, and possible jail time. For a public figure in the media industry, such charges can also impact professional reputation and community standing.

The Gainesville Police Department has not released additional details about the specific circumstances of the traffic stop or Boukari’s blood alcohol content at the time of arrest. The case will proceed through the Alachua County court system, where Boukari will have the opportunity to respond to the charges.

This incident serves as a reminder that DUI enforcement remains a priority for local law enforcement agencies, regardless of an individual’s professional status or community position. The Gainesville Police Department continues to emphasize the dangers of impaired driving and the importance of road safety for all residents and visitors.

The outcome of this case may have implications for both Boukari’s personal future and his role within the local media landscape. As the publisher of a community newspaper, maintaining public trust is essential, and legal troubles can complicate that relationship with readers and advertisers alike.

352News.com is a reader-supported publication. announced the reappointment of University of Florida Board of Trustees member James “Bill” Heavener, despite ongoing fraud allegations that could involve tens of millions of dollars in government funds.

The reappointment, announced Wednesday, comes just three months after former employees accused Heavener and his educational institutions of systematically inflating job placement statistics to defraud government programs. The state senate must still confirm the appointment.

352News.com is a reader-supported publication. The alleged fraud could total tens of millions of dollars in improperly obtained government funds.

The accusations center on claims that the institutions systematically inflated graduate employment rates to qualify for government funding and maintain accreditation standards. A hearing in the case is scheduled for later this month.

Controversial Reappointment Timing

Heavener’s reappointment to the UF Board of Trustees has raised eyebrows given the timing of the fraud allegations. The Board of Trustees plays a crucial role in overseeing the University of Florida’s operations, including financial decisions and academic policies.

Critics argue that maintaining someone facing serious fraud allegations in a position of oversight over a major public university sends the wrong message about accountability and ethical standards in public service.

Background and Context

James “Bill” Heavener has been a prominent figure in Florida’s educational and business communities. His involvement with Full Sail University and other educational institutions has made him a significant player in the state’s higher education landscape.

The University of Florida, as Florida’s flagship university, has faced increased scrutiny over governance decisions and trustee appointments in recent years. The board’s decisions impact thousands of students, faculty, and the university’s $6 billion-plus annual budget.

What’s Next

The Florida Senate will need to confirm Heavener’s reappointment, providing a potential checkpoint for the controversial nomination. With a hearing in the fraud case scheduled for the end of January, more details about the allegations may emerge before senators vote on the appointment.

The outcome could have implications for how Florida handles ethics concerns among public university trustees and sets precedents for accountability in higher education governance.

This story is developing. 352News.com will continue to follow the confirmation process and the fraud case hearing scheduled for later this month.

352News.com is a reader-supported publication. State Representative Yvonne Hayes Hinson (D-Gainesville) has filed House Bill 1029, dubbed “The Motherhood Initiative,” a comprehensive legislative package aimed at enhancing maternal health services and expanding access to early learning programs across Florida.

The bill, introduced January 6, 2026, represents a multi-faceted approach to addressing critical gaps in maternal healthcare and childcare accessibility, particularly for expectant mothers and working families.

352News.com is a reader-supported publication. This initiative would provide personalized healthcare support directly to families during pregnancy and early childhood.

Among the bill’s most notable provisions is the distribution of blood pressure monitors and cuffs to expectant mothers, along with education on proper self-monitoring techniques. This measure addresses growing concerns about maternal hypertension and preeclampsia, conditions that disproportionately affect women with limited access to regular prenatal care.

The legislation also seeks to make early learning more accessible for working families by offering incentives for childcare centers to operate 24-hour services, acknowledging the reality of shift work and non-traditional employment schedules that many Florida families face.

Healthcare Infrastructure Improvements

HB 1029 includes provisions to streamline the licensing process for birthing centers by authorizing the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) to reduce fees for applicants and licensees. The bill also removes certain acceptance criteria for birthing centers, potentially expanding access to alternative birthing options for expectant mothers.

The legislation requires the DOH to create educational materials focused on maternal health and mandates continuing education for physicians that includes review of Medicaid payment processes for maternal healthcare services.

Support for Home Visiting Programs

The bill builds upon Florida’s existing home visiting infrastructure, which includes programs like the Nurse-Family Partnership and the Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) program. These evidence-based initiatives have demonstrated success in improving health and developmental outcomes for at-risk children and supporting new mothers through personalized, professional home-based services.

According to the Florida Association of Healthy Start Coalitions, home visiting programs provide crucial support including pregnancy education, breastfeeding assistance, developmental milestone tracking, and connections to community resources.

Legislative Impact and Timeline

If passed, The Motherhood Initiative would take effect on July 1, 2026, positioning Florida as a leader in comprehensive maternal health support. The bill addresses multiple aspects of maternal and early childhood wellbeing, from prenatal care through early childhood development.

Representative Hinson’s legislation aligns with broader state and national priorities around maternal health, particularly as Florida and other states grapple with maternal mortality rates and healthcare accessibility challenges.

Looking Ahead

The introduction of HB 1029 marks a significant step toward addressing systemic gaps in maternal healthcare and early childhood education. As the 2026 legislative session progresses, advocates for maternal health and early childhood development will be watching closely to see how this comprehensive approach to supporting mothers and families advances through the legislative process.

The bill represents a recognition that maternal health and early learning are interconnected issues that require coordinated policy responses to ensure healthy outcomes for both mothers and children across Florida’s diverse communities.

For more information on HB 1029 and other maternal health legislation, follow 352News.com’s continuing coverage of the 2026 Florida legislative session.

352News.com is a reader-supported publication. encampments on New Year’s Day, leaving some of the area’s most vulnerable residents without shelter during the holiday weekend.

Justin Croft was arrested Thursday evening and charged with two counts of first-degree arson after witnesses identified him as the person responsible for intentionally setting fires at encampments along West Newberry Road.

The first fire was reported Thursday afternoon in the 7700 block of West Newberry Road, where Alachua County Fire Rescue responded to a structure fire at a homeless encampment in the wooded area. Witnesses told deputies they saw two individuals running from the scene and provided descriptions to law enforcement.

Just hours later, around 7:00 p.m., emergency crews were called to a second fire at another encampment in the 8000 block of West Newberry Road, located in the woods behind a Publix supermarket. The two locations are less than a mile apart.

According to the arrest report, a woman at the second encampment told deputies that Croft had threatened to “burn her place down” following a verbal argument earlier in the day. Fire investigators determined the fires were intentionally set, noting the use of accelerants and active burning on bare ground as evidence of arson.

Croft was eventually apprehended around 8:30 p.m. when deputies observed three individuals exiting the woods near Moe’s Southwest Grill on West Newberry Road. After questioning, Croft was identified and taken into custody.

The arrest has raised concerns about safety among Gainesville’s homeless population, who already face numerous challenges during the winter months. The fires destroyed what little property and shelter the encampment residents possessed, compounding their difficulties during the New Year holiday.

Croft is currently being held in the Alachua County Jail without bond. According to court records, he has a previous felony conviction for grand theft of a motor vehicle from a 2022 carjacking case. He was sentenced to probation for that offense but was later incarcerated for probation violations before being released in April 2025.

The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incidents. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact law enforcement.

This disturbing case highlights the ongoing challenges facing Gainesville’s homeless community and the need for increased support services and safe housing options for the city’s most vulnerable residents.

One Injured in Gainesville Party Shooting, Instead, she’s jumping into an already crowded race for Alachua County Commission District 2, leaving her educational post behind.

The New Landscape

The filing updates reveal a shifting political terrain:

• District 1: Open seat (Tina Certain not seeking reelection)
• District 3: Sarah Rockwell running for reelection
• District 5: Two candidates vying to replace Janine Plavac

District 5 Draws Crowd

The hottest contest appears to be District 5, where both Annie Muscato and Jancie Vinson have filed to run. The seat is currently held by Janine Plavac, who was appointed to fill a vacancy but hasn’t filed to retain the position permanently.

Rockwell Stays Put

Sarah Rockwell, Ph.D., who chairs the school board, is bucking the trend of departures. She’s filed for reelection to her District 3 seat, positioning herself as the steady hand during turbulent times for the district.

The One Who Got Away

The race lost some potential drama when Pamela Marshall-Koons pulled out of challenging Rockwell. The mental health advocate and 2024 sheriff candidate withdrew December 22, citing “prayer and careful consideration” in her official withdrawal notice.

Background Noise

These filings come against a backdrop of recent controversies. Both Certain and Rockwell faced state-level criticism over social media comments regarding prominent conservatives’ deaths, drawing rebukes from Florida’s education commissioner.

The board has also grappled with superintendent turnover, budget pressures, and ongoing tensions between local control and state oversight.

What This Means

With Certain’s departure, voters will see at least one fresh face on the five-member board. The District 5 race guarantees another newcomer, while Rockwell’s reelection bid offers continuity.

The real question: Will more candidates jump in before qualifying ends? In Alachua County politics, early filings often prompt additional contenders to emerge.

For a school district navigating leadership changes and political headwinds, these elections could determine whether the board moves in a new direction or maintains its current trajectory.

The countdown to election day begins.

352News.com is a reader-supported publication. intervention in Venezuela, just days after Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was captured by American forces in a dramatic military operation.

The protest comes in response to the January 3rd military strike that resulted in Maduro’s capture and removal from Venezuela, an action that has sparked both celebration and condemnation across Florida and throughout the international community.

Protesters carrying signs reading “Hands off Venezuela” and “No blood for oil” marched through downtown Gainesville, echoing concerns about American foreign policy and potential motivations behind the intervention. The demonstration reflects growing unease among some North Central Florida residents about the Trump administration’s increasingly aggressive stance toward the South American nation.

“We’re seeing history repeat itself,” said one protest organizer who declined to give their name. “When the United States gets involved in another country’s politics, it means death, destruction, and despair for ordinary people.”

The U.S. military operation, which involved elite Delta Force units supported by FBI personnel, targeted Caracas in what officials described as a “large-scale strike” to capture Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. The couple now faces drug trafficking and weapons charges in Manhattan federal court, with Maduro proclaiming his innocence and maintaining he is “still president of Venezuela.”

The intervention has revealed deep divisions within Florida’s diverse communities. While many Venezuelan-Americans, particularly in South Florida, have celebrated Maduro’s removal after years of economic hardship and political repression under his leadership, others view the U.S. action as a dangerous precedent that violates international law and Venezuelan sovereignty.

“The United States obviously has good intentions, but those intentions come with a cost,” said Carlos Garrido, president of the Florida State University Venezuelan Student Association, acknowledging concerns about American interests in Venezuela’s vast oil reserves. Venezuela possesses the world’s largest proven oil reserves, and some critics argue the intervention is primarily motivated by energy interests rather than democratic ideals.

The Trump administration has sent mixed signals about its long-term intentions. President Trump initially stated that the U.S. would “run” Venezuela for an unspecified period, promising to bring in American oil companies to invest billions in the country’s energy sector. However, Secretary of State Marco Rubio later clarified that the U.S. does not intend to manage day-to-day governance but will instead use existing oil sanctions as leverage to influence policy changes.

International reaction has been swift and largely critical. China has demanded Maduro’s immediate release, calling the operation “state terrorism,” while Cuba reported 32 of its citizens killed during the strikes and declared official mourning days. North Korea has also condemned the action, using it to justify its nuclear weapons program by citing the fate of leaders who gave up their weapons programs.

The situation in Venezuela remains fluid, with Vice President Delcy Rodríguez being sworn in as interim leader while simultaneously extending an olive branch to Washington, inviting cooperation on “shared development” and “lasting community coexistence.”

For Gainesville protesters, the intervention represents a troubling escalation of American military involvement in Latin America. Many expressed concerns about the potential for prolonged conflict and the impact on Venezuelan civilians already suffering from years of economic crisis.

“This isn’t about supporting Maduro or his government,” explained one protester. “It’s about opposing military intervention and supporting the right of Venezuelans to determine their own future without foreign interference.”

The protest reflects Gainesville’s history of activism on international issues, with the University of Florida community often serving as a hub for political engagement and debate. As the situation in Venezuela continues to evolve, local activists say they plan to maintain pressure on elected officials to pursue diplomatic rather than military solutions.

Maduro is scheduled to appear in federal court next week, where his attorneys plan to challenge the legality of his capture and assert his rights as a head of state. Meanwhile, the international community watches anxiously as the Trump administration navigates the complex political landscape of post-Maduro Venezuela.

The Gainesville protest serves as a microcosm of the broader national debate over American foreign policy, military intervention, and the balance between promoting democracy and respecting national sovereignty. As one protest sign succinctly put it: “Regime change begins at home.”

352News.com will continue to follow developments in Venezuela and local reactions to U.S. foreign policy. the city’s streets into a vibrant canvas of political satire, artistic expression, and unbridled creativity that has become the hallmark of Hogtown’s most unconventional celebration.
<div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" Inspired by the approaching 95th anniversary of Gainesville legend Bo Diddley’s birth, Terry envisioned a celebration that would capture the artistic spirit and countercultural essence of North Central Florida.

“When pigs fly” — the proverbial expression for the impossible — became the perfect metaphor for a parade that celebrates the seemingly impossible: a community coming together to create something truly extraordinary through pure volunteer effort and artistic vision.

Grand Marshals with Local Flavor

This year’s grand marshal, Shirley the Hot Circle of Dough, represents more than just a beloved local landmark. The iconic donut shop on West University Avenue has been serving Gainesville since 1956, making it a fitting symbol of the city’s enduring character. Previous grand marshals have included civil rights activist Vivian Filer and historians Paul Ortiz and Sheila Payne, reflecting the parade’s commitment to honoring local heroes who’ve shaped Gainesville’s progressive identity.

Where Art Meets Activism

The Flying Pig Parade distinguishes itself from traditional celebrations through its fearless blend of satire and social commentary. Past entries have tackled everything from voting rights issues — featuring participants chasing a ballot box that repeatedly rejected their votes — to environmental concerns with groups like “Bee City” promoting pollination awareness.

The 2026 parade continued this tradition with entries like “The Man With Three Legs,” a marching band with no instruments, and oversized salted almonds that left spectators both amused and slightly confused. These absurdist elements serve as vehicles for deeper messages about community, politics, and the human condition.

Community Building Through Chaos

What makes the Flying Pig Parade truly special is its ability to bring together Gainesville’s diverse communities. Local artists, activists, families, and eccentrics collaborate to create something that transcends traditional parade boundaries. The Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery’s “Grave-Digger Drill Team” marched alongside the “Weird Barbies” dance troupe, while Veterans for Peace shared the route with dancing dinosaurs from Melrose.

The parade’s emphasis on environmental responsibility — no candy throwing, no beads, and a commitment to leaving streets cleaner than they found them — demonstrates how even the most chaotic celebrations can maintain ecological consciousness.

More Than Just a Parade

Following the procession, participants gather at Bo Diddley Plaza for “Bo’s Birthday Bash,” featuring live music, birthday cake, and the kind of spontaneous community gathering that has become increasingly rare in our digital age. This post-parade celebration transforms the event from a mere spectacle into a genuine community building experience.

Looking to the Future

As the Flying Pig Parade enters its fourth year, it has already established itself as an essential part of Gainesville’s cultural landscape. The event’s growth from 50 carefully curated groups to a must-see attraction speaks to the community’s hunger for authentic, grassroots celebrations that reflect their values and creativity.

The parade’s success also highlights Gainesville’s unique position as a progressive haven in North Florida — a place where artists, academics, and activists can come together to create something that celebrates both their differences and their shared commitment to creative expression.

For those who missed this year’s flying pig, organizers are already planning for 2027. As the expression goes, “when pigs fly” might indicate impossibility, but in Gainesville, it happens every January — and the community wouldn’t have it any other way.

The Flying Pig Parade is organized entirely by volunteers and funded through community donations. oversight of Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) to the elected City Commission.

With more than 75% of voters supporting the measure, the results mark the second time in two years that Gainesville citizens have rejected state control of their century-old utility. The victory margin actually exceeded the 73% approval from 2024’s referendum, which was later invalidated on procedural grounds.

352News.com is a reader-supported publication. That legislation, sponsored by former Representative Chuck Clemons of Newberry, has governed GRU operations since mid-2023.

Local Control vs. State Authority

Mayor Harvey Ward sought to reassure residents that the transition back to city oversight would be seamless. “Their lights are still going to work. The water is still going to flow,” Ward told The Gainesville Sun, emphasizing that GRU employees’ compensation and benefits would continue through the city’s human resources department.

However, the path forward remains legally complex. Since the GRU Authority was established by state statute, the referendum’s immediate impact faces significant legal hurdles. The city cannot simply retake control without either a judicial ruling or legislative action.

Legal Battle Looms

GRU CEO Ed Bielarski, who lost his position under the referendum, indicated the fight is far from over. “The will of the people have spoken, but not yet the rule of law,” Bielarski said, announcing plans to file an emergency petition with the First District Court of Appeals.

The current GRU Authority board is expected to continue daily operations while attorneys and state officials determine the referendum’s legal standing. This sets up what could be a prolonged court battle over home rule authority versus state legislative power.

Voter Determination Clear

Despite the legal uncertainty ahead, Tuesday’s results demonstrate unambiguous voter sentiment. The nearly 76% approval rate, with approximately 19% of active voters participating, shows Gainesville residents weren’t confused by ballot language or deterred by the previous referendum’s procedural dismissal.

The issue transcends typical political divides, uniting residents around the principle of local control over essential utilities. As the matter potentially heads to both courts and the Legislature, Gainesville voters have twice made their position unmistakably clear: they want their elected officials, not state appointees, managing GRU.

The coming months will determine whether local democratic will or state legislative authority ultimately prevails in this ongoing power struggle over one of Florida’s largest municipal utilities.

352News.com is a reader-supported publication. apartment complex parking lot, prompting a massive police response and raising concerns about public safety in residential areas.

Mykell Torrence Hicks, 31, was arrested Saturday and charged with firing a gun in public and possession of marijuana with intent to sell following the incident at Phoenix Apartments on SW 26th Way.
<div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" Witnesses told police they saw several people running into a nearby apartment after hearing the gunfire.

When officers arrived, five individuals emerged from the apartment, including Hicks. During questioning, Hicks provided a detailed account of what he claimed transpired.

Suspect’s Account

Hicks told investigators that when he exited his apartment, he observed an unknown individual aiming a gun in his direction. He said he quickly took cover behind a vehicle and retrieved his own pistol from his waistband.

According to Hicks’ statement, he heard multiple gunshots but was uncertain if they were directed at him. He claimed to have then witnessed the unknown shooter firing at a group of people located north of the apartment complex. In response, Hicks said he stood up and fired approximately 17 rounds toward the north end of the complex.

After discharging his weapon, Hicks admitted to running back inside his apartment and placing the gun on a counter. He acknowledged that he was unaware if any of his shots struck anyone but believed one round may have hit the window of a black Cadillac parked in the area.

Evidence and Charges

Police recovered multiple shell casings from the parking lot near where Hicks admitted to firing his weapon. The arresting officer noted in the report that Hicks “shot multiple rounds recklessly in an apartment complex, with multiple residents and citizens in the area.”

The investigation took a significant turn when officers obtained a search warrant for Hicks’ apartment. During the search, they discovered approximately 491.3 grams of marijuana in his bedroom, along with resealable baggies and a scale – items that law enforcement officials say are “indicative of someone who sells narcotics.”

Legal Proceedings

Hicks, who has no prior local criminal convictions, appeared before Judge Phillip Pena who set bail at $175,000. The substantial bond amount reflects the serious nature of the charges and the potential danger to public safety.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about gun violence in residential areas and the risks associated with individuals taking matters into their own hands rather than contacting law enforcement.

Community Impact

The incident at Phoenix Apartments serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of discharging firearms in populated areas. With multiple residents present during the shooting, the potential for tragedy was significant. The fact that no injuries were reported appears to be more a matter of luck than intent.

Local residents expressed concern about safety in their community, with many questioning what measures can be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.

As the legal process moves forward, the case against Hicks will likely focus on whether his actions constituted legitimate self-defense or reckless endangerment of the community.

This story is developing. TV20 Chief Meteorologist Bill Quinlan passed away suddenly over the weekend at age 64.
<div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" His death has sent shockwaves through both the local community and the meteorological profession nationwide.

A Career Built on Trust and Dedication

Joining WCJB in 1996, Quinlan became a fixture in North Central Florida households, providing weather forecasts for the station’s 5 Live, 6 p.m., First Look at 10 p.m., and 11 p.m. newscasts. His steady presence guided viewers through 27 hurricane seasons and countless severe weather events.

“During storm situations, you’re dealing with coverage 24 hours, 36 hours or so, and you want to make sure you have a consistent message,” recalled former TV20 chief meteorologist Mike Potter. “It’s very important.”

Quinlan’s impact extended far beyond his daily forecasts. The New England native became deeply integrated into the fabric of North Central Florida life, from fishing in the Gulf to golfing at Ironwood and attending Gator baseball games. He was known for his signature bow ties worn every Friday and his genuine passion for weather that colleagues say was evident in everything he did.

Mentor to Hundreds

Perhaps Quinlan’s greatest legacy lies in the meteorologists he trained and mentored throughout his career. Former colleagues estimate that he influenced hundreds of weather professionals who now work across the country, from Connecticut to Hawaii.

“It’s going to live on through every single one of the meteorologists that he trained, who are all across the country. I would say hundreds of them,” said former TV20 meteorologist Scott Gagliardi.

Alex Carter, a former member of Quinlan’s weather team, emphasized that Quinlan’s care extended beyond professional development. “He also cared for us outside of work, his weather team. He always cared for us, and anything he could do to help he would. He wanted us to have a friendship and he developed that and built that with us.”

Remembering ‘Our Lighthouse’

When Quinlan retired in February 2024, WCJB staff referred to him as “our lighthouse” - a testament to his role as a steady guide through both calm and stormy weather. His colleagues remember him for requiring complete trust during high-pressure weather events and for making that trust come naturally through his expertise and demeanor.

“I learned everything from when Bill would do a weather hit,” Carter recalled. “Some people just have a passion for something; you can just tell, they don’t have to tell you, it’s just in their body language. That’s just Bill.”

A Community Mourns

Quinlan leaves behind his wife and son, as well as a large extended family. But his family extends far beyond blood relations to include the countless viewers who welcomed him into their homes each evening and the meteorological community he helped shape.

As North Central Florida continues to process this loss, Quinlan’s impact remains visible in every weather forecast delivered by those he mentored and in the weather preparedness of a community he served faithfully for nearly three decades.

The station where he spent the majority of his career continues to feel the void left by his passing. “It’s not just a normal Monday; it’s different for so many people,” Gagliardi noted, capturing the sentiment shared by colleagues, viewers, and the broader meteorological community.

352News.com will continue to follow this story as the community remembers and celebrates the life of Bill Quinlan.

352News.com is a reader-supported publication. It represents Gainesville and the surrounding communities—neighbors, small businesses, students, families, veterans, service workers, and people who live here every day. It represents conversations at coffee shops, local restaurants trying to survive, victims of crime who feel unheard, and public decisions that quietly affect real lives.

352News exists to tell those stories.

A Community-Focused Mission

At its core, 352News.com is about accountability—but not just political accountability.

It’s about community accountability.

That means:

Holding public officials accountable for the decisions they make

Holding institutions accountable when systems fail people

Holding ourselves accountable to stay informed, engaged, and honest

Local journalism should never exist just to criticize. It should exist to clarify. To ask hard questions without becoming hostile. To report facts without dehumanizing people. And to give residents the information they need to decide for themselves.

My hope is that 352News becomes a trusted place where readers feel informed—not manipulated—and empowered—not angry.

What We’ll Cover (And Why It Matters)

🍽️ Restaurant Reviews That Support Local Business

Local restaurants are part of a community’s identity. When we review a restaurant, the goal isn’t to tear it down—it’s to highlight local effort, creativity, and culture. Small businesses don’t have national PR teams. They have families, staff, and thin margins.

Good journalism supports the backbone of a community.

🎤 Interviews With People Affected by Crime

Crime reporting often focuses on headlines and mugshots, not human impact. We aim to center the voices of those affected—victims, families, and community members—while reporting responsibly and without sensationalism.

People deserve dignity, even in difficult stories.

🏛️ Political Accountability Without Partisan Theater

Local politics affect schools, policing, housing, zoning, and public trust. 352News will ask questions, review records, attend meetings, and explain decisions in plain language—without telling readers what to think.

Accountability works best when it’s informed, fair, and consistent.

📰 The Full Gamut of Local News

From community events and public safety updates to cultural stories and local debates, we aim to cover the full spectrum of what matters here—especially the things that often go uncovered.

Not everything important is breaking news. Some of the most meaningful stories unfold quietly.

Giving Back to the Community

Journalism should never just extract from a community—it should give back.

That means:

Promoting local voices

Highlighting nonprofits and community efforts

Creating space for constructive dialogue

Showing up consistently, not just when something goes wrong

Long-term, my hope is that 352News becomes a platform where community members feel comfortable reaching out—whether they have a story, a concern, or an idea that deserves attention.

What I Hope We Accomplish Together

I don’t believe one person builds a strong local newsroom alone.

My hope is that 352News becomes:

A place people trust

A place officials respect

A place residents feel represented

A place where facts matter more than noise

If we can hold leaders accountable and treat each other with respect, we all win.
If we can stay informed and stay human, communities grow stronger.
If we care about where we live, we should care about the truth—especially when it’s uncomfortable.

352News.com exists because this community deserves journalism that’s present, honest, and invested.

And this is just the beginning.

352News.com is a reader-supported publication.
